New attack breaks Miranda post-quantum signature scheme

A key recovery attack drops Miranda's security from 146 to 46 bits by reducing its masked Gabidulin code to a polynomial-time MinRank instance.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ RESEARCH & DEEP DIVES

  • New attack breaks Miranda post-quantum signature scheme over matrix Gabidulin codes
A new paper presents an efficient key recovery attack against the Miranda signature scheme.
    • Applies to the Miranda signature scheme, which masks a matrix Gabidulin code to enable efficient error decoding
    • The attack recovers the Fqm-linear structure of the masked matrix Gabidulin code by reducing to a MinRank instance over the extension field Fqm with matrices over Fq, solvable in polynomial time
    • For the proposed parameter set with m=79, security drops from 146 bits to 46 bits
    • The attack is similar to a prior attack on the EGMC encryption scheme (arXiv:2608.03328), but reduces to MinRank in polynomial time for Miranda
