Storm-3168 Deletes Azure Resources in 7-Minute Destructive Cloud

Storm-3168 wiped Azure resources in a 7-minute destructive attack, Kiteworks patched a critical flaw, and a CVSS 9.9 Dassault vulnerability surfaced.

🚨 ACTIVE EXPLOITATION

  • Storm-3168 Deletes Azure Resources in 7-Minute Destructive Cloud Attack
Storm-3168 used compromised Azure service principal credentials to destroy cloud resources in about seven minutes.
    • Applies to Azure customers using service principals, storage accounts, SQL databases, Key Vaults, Function Apps, App Services, and backup/recovery controls.
    • Microsoft tracked actor Storm-3168 used two compromised service principals in one tenant: one mapped the environment over 15+ hours with 300+ read operations, the other destroyed resources and collected storage keys.
    • Over roughly seven minutes the attacker made 100+ deletion attempts against storage accounts, deleting most, plus a Key Vault, Function App, and App Service plan; Azure SQL deletions failed due to an unsupported API version.
    • One service principal's client ID, secret, and tenant ID had appeared in plaintext in a public GitHub issue; the activity is linked to JADEPUFFER agentic ransomware operations and likely extortion.
    • IOCs: 45.131.66[.]106 (App Service probing, malicious ARM requests), 34.153.223[.]102 and 64.20.53[.]230 (App Service probing).
