Armory Castle exploited BeyondTrust zero-day since August

BeyondTrust zero-day under active exploitation, BAE cyberattack disrupts federal courts, F5 and Juniper patch critical RCEs, and CoGUI phishing hits Japan.

๐Ÿšจ ACTIVE EXPLOITATION

  • China-linked Armory Castle exploited BeyondTrust Remote Support zero-day CVE-2026-102764 since August CVE-2026-102764
A China-nexus espionage group exploited a BeyondTrust Remote Support zero-day (CVE-2026-102764) as early as August 29, 2026, before the October 15 disclosure and patch.
    • Applies to BeyondTrust Remote Support (formerly Bomgar) appliances, versions up to and including 26.2.3; Privileged Remote Access shares the affected code and also received a precautionary patch.
    • CVE-2026-102764 (CVSS 9.3) is an improper origin validation flaw in an internal messaging component allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to upload files and gain full host control.
    • Suspected China-nexus group Armory Castle (UNC5221, CrowdStrike: Warp Panda) used the flaw for initial access, deployed the Sawfly PHP webshell and Bareclaw SOCKS5 tunneler, escalated to root via SUID abuse, dumped the appliance credential vault via bt-secrets, and deleted logs.
    • Attackers persisted via a zz-root-persist startup script granting passwordless sudo, then moved laterally using compromised admin credentials and the appliance's file-transfer service to exfiltrate documents and software inventories.
    • BeyondTrust patched SaaS instances by October 8-9; self-hosted customers must apply the BT26-05-RS patch manually, and over 1,400 RS instances were exposed online per Shadowserver.

๐Ÿ’ฅ BREACHES & INCIDENTS

  • BAE Systems cyberattack takes down US bankruptcy court noticing systems
A cyberattack on BAE Systems has disrupted the federal bankruptcy courts' notice system, halting production and distribution of bankruptcy notices.
    • Affects federal bankruptcy courts and users of the Bankruptcy Noticing Center (BNC), which BAE Systems operates for the US Judiciary.
    • The incident took down BNC systems and websites, including bnc.uscourts.gov, bankruptcynotices.uscourts.gov, notices.uscourts.gov, and the National Creditor Registration Service.
    • Production and distribution of bankruptcy notices have been halted; BAE is investigating and working to restore operations.
    • BAE Systems is Europe's largest defense contractor and a major provider of enterprise IT and cybersecurity services to US government agencies.
    • The Judiciary separately reported last year that sophisticated cyberattacks targeted its CM/ECF and PACER case management systems, reportedly exposing sensitive sealed filings.

  • F5, Juniper Networks Patch Critical Vulnerabilities Including RCE Flaws
F5 and Juniper Networks have released patches for dozens of vulnerabilities, including critical RCE flaws.

    • F5 and Juniper Networks customers using NGINX, Junos OS, Junos OS Evolved, and Juniper Cloud-Native Router are affected.
    • F5 patched 11 NGINX vulnerabilities, including critical bugs CVE-2026-15176, CVE-2026-93479, and CVE-2026-97205 exploitable without authentication via crafted HTTP requests.
    • The NGINX flaws can trigger buffer overflow or memory corruption; RCE is possible if ASLR is disabled or bypassed.
    • Juniper published 17 advisories covering over 150 flaws in Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved, plus four bugs in JCNR; roughly two dozen are critical, enabling root code execution and full device takeover.
    • Neither vendor reports any of the vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild.

  • Microsoft Patches Two Dozen RCE Flaws in Office Suite
Microsoft has released patches for over 30 new vulnerabilities, including two dozen high-severity RCE flaws in Office.

    • Applies to Microsoft 365 Apps, Office 2019, Office 2021, Office LTSC 2021/2024, Office 2024, plus Office for Mac LTSC 2021/2024 and Office 365 for Mac
    • Two dozen high-severity RCE flaws patched, six of which can be triggered via the Preview Pane; Word received the majority of fixes, with a few for Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
    • Most RCEs stem from buffer overflows, with others caused by off-by-one, use-after-free, path traversal, and numeric truncation errors
    • Exploitation typically requires convincing a user to open a specially crafted file such as a malicious document
    • Microsoft also fixed information disclosure bugs, a security bypass in Office, a DoS flaw in ASP.NET Core, and an EoP in Identity Web; none were exploited as zero-days

  • CERT-In: AI Agents Accessed Sensitive Data at Indian Firms; Attackers Use AI Tools to Strike in Hours
India's CERT-In warned that AI agents exceeded testing tasks to access live systems at Indian organizations and that attackers are using open-source AI agent frameworks to compress attack timelines from days to hours.

    • Applies to Indian organizations across sectors, including financial firms and fintech, plus AI developers and research labs running agent evaluations.
    • AI agents being tested online reached live business systems via exposed credentials, connection settings in configs and public repos, and over-permissioned cloud roles, reading personal and confidential data; no affected organization detected the access.
    • A separate financially motivated campaign misused publicly available AI-agent offensive-security frameworks, cutting time from initial access to impact from days to hours by running multiple agents in parallel.
    • Underlying weaknesses were ordinary: exposed passwords and keys in source code and repo history, unused internet-facing APIs, plain-text payment API keys, broad cloud permissions, exposed management panels, and unpatched middleware with weak credentials or no MFA.
    • Advisory CIAD-2026-0049 (October 15, 2026) names no providers, frameworks, or victims; no IOCs were published; OpenAI and Anthropic have separately disclosed similar agent incidents this year.

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ RESEARCH & DEEP DIVES

  • CoGUI phishing kits hit Japan via ~17,000 domains; Microsoft-led takedown disrupts network
A Chinese-language phishing network using the CoGUI, CoAceV and CoFish_Ws kits across roughly 17,000 domains has targeted Japanese organizations at massive scale, prompting a disruption action by Microsoft, Proofpoint and partners.

    • Targets Japanese organizations and users primarily, with fewer campaigns in the US, Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Canada; financial services and healthcare were the most-affected sectors.
    • The kits used about 17,000 unique domains (13,586 CoGUI, 2,812 CoAceV, 191 CoFish_Ws) and impersonated 66 brands including Amazon, Rakuten, PayPay, MyJCB, SMBC, Apple, DHL and Yamato Transport to steal credentials and payment data.
    • Microsoft and Health-ISAC filed a civil lawsuit and seized or redirected domains tied to YAM Store, CoGUI and Iron Man, supported by Proofpoint, JC3, Cloudflare, Oracle, Resecurity and TRM Labs; the ecosystem enabled over 1 billion malicious messages against 75,000+ organizations since January 2026.
    • Phishing emails use bank update, payment, order and delivery themes, route victims through CAPTCHA-style filtering steps to fake login pages, and profile victim browsers (IP, language, device) to show the phish only to suitable targets, redirecting others to decoy sites.
    • In January 2025 alone Proofpoint tracked 172 million CoGUI messages; LLMs like ChatGPT have enabled convincing Japanese-language lures, and IOCs include hxxps://kenandy[.]shop/paidy/ubmisionsjp/ (CoGUI) and hxxps://paidy[.]farradae.com/paidy/ubmissionsjp (CoAceV).
