โš ๏ธ INCIDENTS & SAFETY

  • OpenAI engineer arrested for allegedly bugging executive conference room
OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested by the FBI for allegedly planting a hidden recording device in an executive conference room.
    • Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national employed at OpenAI since July 2025, was charged with using a device to intercept oral communications.
    • OpenAI found a 'sophisticated recording device' plugged into a TV's USB port in an executive conference room, wrapped in toilet paper and encrypted, installed around September 28th.
    • A second recording device was found in Alfozan's unattended bag; CCTV allegedly showed him near the room on multiple dates despite lacking access.
    • OpenAI used its own AI models to trace the device to the employee, fired him, and referred the case to the FBI; it says there's no indication model weights, source code, or customer data were accessed.
    • Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine; the case highlights insider-threat and counterintelligence risks for AI labs.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ POLICY & REGULATION

  • UPDATE: Judge orders OpenAI to hand over hiring records in Apple trade secrets case
A federal judge ordered OpenAI to give Apple expedited access to hiring interview materials and approved depositions in Apple's trade secrets lawsuit.
    • Applies to Apple's July lawsuit against OpenAI, its io Products hardware unit, and former Apple employees Chang Liu and Tang Tan over alleged hardware trade secret theft.
    • Judge Edward Davila ordered OpenAI to turn over interview documents for former Apple employees within 5 days (already collected) and 14 days for other materials, plus private LINE messages and depositions of Liu, Peng, and Tang Yew Tan.
    • The judge denied Apple's requests for expedited access to OpenAI R&D on metal finishes and power management and broader hardware discovery, leaving room to refile.
    • OpenAI denies wrongdoing, saying ~400 former Apple employees joined it and that Apple's own departure practices caused residual file access; a preliminary injunction hearing was set for October 14.
    • The ruling matters for OpenAI's first consumer hardware device, reportedly planned for announcement in 2026 and shipping in 2027.
